Diabetic Neuropathy - Case Study

Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes, in which nerves are damaged as a result of hyperglycemia. Mrs. S as 62- year old woman was medically diagnosed with peripheral diabetic neuropathy. Symptoms included Type II Diabetes for the last 20 years, severe weight loss, numbness, cramps, insensitivity to pain and temperature, loss of balance and coordination, muscle weakness and accompanying depression due to her health problems. Her condition had been further complicated in the last year by the onset of peripheral neuropathy, which can occur in long-term diabetic patients. Due to her weakness in her legs Mrs. S could no longer climb up the stairs unaided and suffered with an inability to go from a sitting to standing position without help. Obviously Mrs S continued with her medication for Type II Diabetes, but further conventional medical therapy could not help her the neuropathy, and the medical doctor referred her to Integrated therapies in order to arrest the neuropathy. Due to her physical status her treatment options were limited.

Upon Ayurvedic diagnosis it was not a surprise to find that all her doshas were out of balance, with Vata being highly vitiated. The following program of therapies were used: Vata pacifying diet, Ayurvedic herbs that is traditionally been used for debility, Nadi Vigyan Acupressure to regulate Prana, seated Ayurvedic Massage using a unique Ayurvedic herbal oil for neuromuscular disorder and Homeopathic remedies to deal with her accompanying emotional problems.

After 12 weekly sessions her appetite returned and her weight stabilized. Furthermore, there was a disappearance of cramping and numbness and her neuromuscular degeneration had arrested and she regained the strength in her legs that allowed her to climb stairs unaided for the first time in over a year. The strategic combination of pharmaceutical medication, Ayurveda, Nadi Vigyan Acupressure and Homeopathy help reversed her declining health.
